On June 5th, 2018 the Justice Department announced a post-acute healthcare management firm agreed to pay more than $1.7 million to resolve False Claims Act allegations they caused other hospitals to submit, claims for reimbursement from Medicare for services that were not medically reasonable or necessary. The Justice Department alleged the healthcare management firm’s individual patients progress was not being adequately tracked or documented, the patients received an inappropriate level of treatment, and the therapy provided was primarily recreational or diversional, and was not considered therapeutic. A former employee received $300,000 for exposing these practices.
