Hundreds of demonstrators gathered on the sands of Tel Aviv’s central beach on Saturday, voicing calls for former US President Donald Trump to intervene in Israeli politics and help remove Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from office. The rally unfolded against the backdrop of ongoing tensions in Gaza, despite a recently declared ceasefire that has yet to quell public frustration over the government’s handling of the conflict.
The protest, held near the US Embassy, drew a diverse crowd of activists, families, and concerned citizens. Many participants carried American flags and placards bearing slogans such as “Trump, Save Israel” and “Netanyahu Must Go.” Some crafted elaborate sand portraits depicting Netanyahu, referencing his status as a wanted figure at the International Criminal Court, and juxtaposed these with images of Trump, symbolising their appeal for international intervention.
Organisers described the demonstration as a response to what they termed “governmental paralysis” in the face of continued violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “We are here because our leadership has failed to bring peace or security,” said one protester, a local business owner. “We believe Trump has the influence to push for real change and end Netanyahu’s rule.”
The rally coincided with the second day of the Gaza ceasefire, which has seen tens of thousands of Palestinians returning to devastated neighbourhoods. Israeli officials have confirmed that 48 hostages remain in Gaza, with approximately 20 believed to be alive. The anticipated release of these hostages has become a focal point for both Israeli and international attention, with hopes that Monday will mark a turning point in the crisis.
US envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner addressed the crowd, receiving enthusiastic applause. Kushner expressed optimism about the imminent release of hostages and acknowledged the suffering endured by civilians in Gaza. “We will celebrate when the hostages are freed,” he told demonstrators. “President Trump’s commitment to peace and stability in the region remains unwavering.”
The atmosphere on the beach was charged with emotion. Many attendees hugged, took selfies, and sang songs of hope. The crowd’s reaction to Netanyahu’s name was markedly negative, with loud boos underscoring widespread dissatisfaction with his leadership. Several protesters cited the prime minister’s handling of the war and the prolonged nature of the conflict as reasons for their discontent.
The demonstration also highlighted broader concerns about the future governance of Gaza. With Israeli troops expected to gradually withdraw, questions persist regarding who will assume control and whether Hamas will comply with demands to disarm. Aid agencies, including the World Food Programme, have announced plans to restore food distribution points in Gaza, aiming to address acute shortages exacerbated by months of blockade and fighting.
Approximately 200 US troops have arrived in Israel to monitor the ceasefire and facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid. A new coordination centre is being established to oversee logistical and security arrangements, with the goal of ensuring that essential supplies reach those in need. Aid organisations have positioned 170,000 tonnes of food in neighbouring countries, awaiting Israeli authorisation to deliver the shipments.
Despite the ceasefire, the situation in Gaza remains dire. Returning residents have found their homes reduced to rubble, with entire neighbourhoods unrecognisable. Humanitarian groups continue to urge Israeli authorities to allow greater access for aid convoys, warning that delays could exacerbate an already critical situation.
The Tel Aviv protest reflects a growing sense of urgency among Israelis who fear that the current political leadership is incapable of resolving the crisis. While some see Trump as a divisive figure, many demonstrators believe his influence could be pivotal in pressuring Netanyahu to step down and in advancing diplomatic efforts to secure lasting peace.
As the region awaits the outcome of the hostage negotiations and the next phase of the ceasefire, the voices on Tel Aviv’s beach serve as a reminder of the deep divisions and high stakes at play. For many, the demonstration was not only a call for international support but also an expression of hope that change is possible, even in the midst of ongoing uncertainty.
