US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, addressed an event at the Israeli Embassy in Washington on Monday, urging Israelis to prioritize unity over division as the nation celebrated its Independence Day. Witkoff acknowledged the day as “bittersweet,” with the ongoing captivity of 59 hostages seized from Israel adding a somber note to the festivities.
Speaking at the event, Witkoff emphasized the remarkable nature of Israel since its inception. “Israel is an extraordinary nation from its founding. It has faced external threats with creativity, resilience, and triumph, and [the United States] will always be [its] strongest ally,” he stated. However, Witkoff stressed that the true strength of Israel lies in its internal cohesion.
Reflecting on the sacrifices made by Israelis over the past 20 months, Witkoff called upon the nation to come together. “In their honor, I urge the Israeli people to choose unity over division, vision over disagreement, and hope over despair. When you do, Israel’s future will shine brighter than ever,” he added.
Witkoff conveyed greetings from US President Donald Trump, whom he described as “a great friend of Israel.” He congratulated the Jewish state on its anniversary and lauded Israel as “an extraordinary nation.”
The US envoy also touched upon other critical issues, stating that the US and Israel are in agreement that “Iran shall never get a nuclear weapon.” He further indicated that there would be “a lot of announcements” regarding the expansion of the Abraham Accords in the near future.
The backdrop to this call for unity is the emotional weight of 59 individuals still held hostage in Gaza tunnels. This reality has cast a shadow over what would typically be a day of unreserved celebration, making the occasion a mix of national pride and deep concern for the well-being of those still in captivity.
Witkoff’s appeal for unity comes at a time when Israel, like many nations, faces internal debates and diverse perspectives on various issues. His message underscored the importance of setting aside disagreements and focusing on shared goals and values, particularly in the face of external challenges and internal anxieties.
The event at the Israeli Embassy served as a platform for reaffirming the strong bond between the United States and Israel. Witkoff’s remarks highlighted the enduring commitment of the US to its ally while also emphasizing the significance of internal solidarity for Israel’s continued strength and prosperity. The combination of celebrating independence while acknowledging the ongoing plight of the hostages created a poignant atmosphere, underscoring the complexities and challenges facing the nation.
