May 11, 2026 – Somalia has a deep prehistoric history and evidence of ancient human habitation in the Somali Peninsula. Over time, these societies developed a distinct identity rooted in shared language, culture and values. Today, Somalia stands as one nation, united by a common heritage, a single language and a collective aspiration for peace, dignity and stability.
Somalia is generally understood as part of the Horn of Africa and East Africa. While Somalia maintains historical and cultural ties with countries across the Red Sea, it is essential to recognize its clear position within the East African region. This distinction matters, particularly when discussing regional dynamics and international relations.
It is in this context that Israel’s official recognition of Somaliland, announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on December 26, 2025, raises serious concern from a Somali perspective. Somalia maintains that such a step risks undermining its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Somaliland, Somalia argues, remains an integral part of its territory, and any formal recognition to the contrary challenges internationally recognized borders and long-standing diplomatic norms.
Somalia is a sovereign state. Like all nations, Somalia maintains that its unity and territorial integrity must be respected in accordance with international law and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. From Somalia’s perspective, these principles are not optional — they apply equally to all countries, regardless of geography or political alliances.
From Somalia’s perspective, it has sought restraint in regional and global affairs. Somalia says it seeks peaceful engagement and has focused on rebuilding its institutions, strengthening peace, and cooperating with international partners. Its contributions to regional security in East Africa, Somalia maintains, remain significant — particularly in countering threats that undermine peace and development.
Somalia says it is actively engaged in combating extremist groups. Its people have endured immense challenges in confronting such groups, and those efforts continue. When tensions arise anywhere in the world, Somalia calls for restraint, dialogue and respect for international norms.
From a Somali perspective, both East Africa and neighboring regions benefit from cooperation rather than confrontation. Somalia’s approach to foreign relations, it argues, is grounded in mutual respect, non-interference and peaceful coexistence. Somalia argues that stability is best achieved through dialogue and adherence to international principles.
It is therefore important, this article argues, that all nations — including Israel — engage with Somalia in a manner that respects its unity and sovereignty. Recognition of any region within Somalia as a separate state has drawn condemnation from the African Union, the Arab League, and other regional bodies concerned about the precedent it sets for territorial integrity. Somalia stands for peace, and this article calls upon Israel to uphold these shared values and to engage constructively.
